The Stages of Mesothelioma

Generally speaking, the stages of mesothelioma cancer develop in about four steps. The stages of Mesothelioma are there to determine how much the cancer has spread. Doctors use something called the Butchart System to determine the mass of the tumor as well as the distance it has spread. The first stage of Mesothelioma is defined as the cancer only existing on one side of the chest, and it has not yet grown or spread into the chest wall. Once the patient has reached stage two, however, things become much more invasive. By stage two of mesothelioma, the patient will experience cancer possibly spreading the heart, lymph nodes, or chest wall but may still be eligible for mesothelioma surgery.
The stages of mesothelioma are in four parts. By the time the patient reaches stages three and four, the cancer is usually incurable. Stage three involves the cancer moving to other lymph nodes outside of the chest wall. Once this happens, it tends to begin to spread much more rapidly throughout the body. By stage four of mesothelioma, it has spread to the actual bloodstream as well as potentially other organs such as the liver, kidneys, or even the intestines.
Doctors recognize the stages of mesothelioma as a way to determine what kind of treatment and survival options are possible. Staging the disease serves as a guide so that they can make better decisions and determine how to move forward in a way that will best serve the interest and health of the patient who suffers from this horrible disease.
